TOZI Grand Cafe Afternoon Tea Review

You might be wondering what you could do to level up an Afternoon Tea offering. And I’m here to tell you that the answer is to put an Italian twist on it. And that’s what you’ll get if you try out the Afternoon Tea at TOZI Grand Cafe in Battersea. And for one month they are launching a new menu in collaboration with Good & Proper Tea. This is to celebrate Afternoon Tea Week (7 to 13 August) and will run until 7 September.

SAVOURY DELICACIES

We started with the bottom tier of the Afternoon Tea start with the savoury delicacies. Pane Carasau, a traditional flatbread from Sardinia, was light and crispy but did not have a lot of flavour. This was not an issue though as there was a selection of cured meats, pickles, and cheeses. Combined, the Pane Carasau becomes a canvas for the picky bits and offers a blend of flavours and textures. The salty and savoury notes of the meats, and richness of the cheese complimented each other well.

Additionally, in the savoury treats was Prosciutto, Mozzarella, and Rocket on Ciabatta Bread, and Vegetables and Pesto on Focaccia. Prosciutto and Mozzarella are a classic combination that seems simple but can’t be beaten. Put a plate of both in front of me and I would happily make my way through it. The quality of both played a significant role in the overall taste. I’ll admit I removed the vegetables from the Focaccia and had it plain. Focaccia is my favourite type of bread and this one was soft and fluffy and really good.

RASPBERRY MARITOZZI AND WHIPPED CREAM

On the second tier you get two Raspberry Maritozzi and whipped cream per person. Maritozzi is a traditional Italian sweet bun, I’d describe it as a soft and light brioche style bun. It had a soft and slight dense texture with the raspberry giving a burst of fruity flavour. The raspberries also had a touch of tartness which worked well with the sweetness of the bun and whipped cream. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, I imagine this would be a hit with you.

On first appearance it looks like there is a lot of whipped cream included in the Maritozzi. And as someone who’s not a big fan of whipped cream, I was getting myself ready to remove some. That is until I took a bite and found that the blend of flavours was delicious. The whipped cream had a light and airy texture, and all aspects of the dish worked well together. This was the highlight of the Afternoon Tea for me!

SWEET TREATS

The top tier included four delicate and aesthetically pleasing miniature desserts with flavourings pulled from Good & Proper Teas’ range. First up was a Hibiscus and Morello Cherry Crostata, a rustic free-form version of an open fruit tart. The pastry was buttery and flaky but with the filling resting on top the pastry was hollow and slightly dry. The floral notes of hibiscus and the richness of the cherries was an interesting mix but need some additional filling.

Next up was the Earl Grey and Chocolate Torta blending the distinct flavour of Earl Grey with rich chocolate. It was quite a decadent dish but was a bit too rich for my palette. Finally, we had Green Tea and Strawberry infused Macarons which were my favourite from the dessert selection. And that is a big compliment from someone who usually struggles to enjoy the texture of a macaron. I really enjoyed the flavour combination and was a very satisfying treat.
