Marie Curie: The Musical delves into the life of the pioneering scientist, Marie Sklodowska-Curie. From her early days in Poland to her groundbreaking work at Sorbonne University in Paris alongside her husband Pierre Curie. The story highlights their discovery of Radium, a monumental achievement that earned them the Nobel Prize. The musical explores the devastating health impacts of radium on the factory workers handling it, inspired by the real-life Radium Girls.

The narrative skilfully navigates Marie Curie’s journey of scientific achievement and the moral complexities that accompanied her revolutionary discoveries. It courageously portrayed the plight of the factory workers suffering from radium poisoning. It draws a poignant parallel between scientific progress and its unintended consequences. The storyline also captures the societal challenges Marie faced as a woman in science.

CHRISSIE BHIMA SHINES WITH HER EMOTIONAL PERFORMANCE AS ANNE KOWALSKA

Directed by Sarah Meadows, the production boasts an innovative stage design. Notably dynamic projections and a revolving staircase, although the latter did leave me feeling dizzy at times. The projections against the backdrop included excerpts from Marie’s journal, scientific symbols, the periodic table, and more. It added an extra layer and enhanced the storytelling but immersing you further in the subject matter. As does the creative use of lighting to stimulate the glow of radium, adding to this visually captivating experience.

Alisa Davidson delivered a compelling performance as Marie Curie, capturing her relentless pursuit of scientific truth. But it’s Chrissie Bhima in the role of Anne Kowalska who truly shines in the performance. The way she portrays Anne’s slow decline in health from radiation poisoning was enchanting to watch. Her ballads resonated with emotional depth, and were soulful, powerful, and breath-taking to watch. The musical score enhances the narrative’s emotional impact of the show.

Prior to seeing Marie Curie: The Musical I knew very little about the woman outside of her being a notable scientist. I learnt a lot through watching the show and I enjoyed the fact they didn’t gloss over the darker side of things. Despite minor pacing issues, the musical succeeds in honouring Marie Curie’s legacy whilst acknowledging the human cost of her revolutionary discoveries. If you’re looking for a thought-provoking theatrical experience intertwined with historical significance, this is the show for you.
