THERE’S ONLY ONE RULE – EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT MUM’S

If you’re after a Christmas show that’s as funny as it is silly, with a dash of emotional heart, The Sisters of Shesus: Christmas at Mum’s is the ticket to buy. This irreverent yuletide adventure brings the audience crashing into the chaotic lives of two offbeat sisters returning back to their Mothers for Christmas. The now duo, after former member, Shesus, the legendary drag queen of their trio, has “transcended” into the world of PAYE return to their matriarchal roots: Mum’s house and we are all invited. Don’t mind if I do. 

What unfolds is a riotous blend of campy comedy, festive nostalgia, and just the right touch of absurdity. The night included a  karaoke-fuelled romp through classics like Y Viva España, a delightfully tacky prawn ring centrepiece (or is that head piece?), and the culinary chaos of Sister Mary Berry’s “festive bangers with all the trimmings.”. There are also some fun Christmas games which I certainly got the losing end of…but I admit defeat with grace and honour (I was robbed). 

The Nun dressed performers, Danielle and Lauren Meehan, who are also the writers, directors, and actual twin sisters bring high energy, quick wit, and the kind of charm that had the audience both laughing and leaning in for moments of surprising tenderness. Some of the audience who find christmas with the family tricky  may find themselves yearning for a Christmas experience that they have never known as they hear about funny and warm festive family moments being retold. 

Audience participation is a key ingredient here. While it adds to the hilarity, those who aren’t fans of being dragged into the spotlight may want to perch at the back—though even that might not save you from the Sisters’ playful antics. There was also a moment where they encouraged you to speak and engage with the person next to you (who in my case was a man I’d never met). As a neurodiverse person this freaked me out as I like to have a bit of control over those sorts of situations but I managed to warm myself up again afterwards and enjoy the show…and the man was lovely but socially anxious types will get what I mean so a lil heads up there for y’all. 

Though The Sisters of Shesus: Christmas at Mum’s embraces a scrappy, unpolished aesthetic, the raw energy and commitment of the cast ensure this is a joyous night out. It might not be everyone’s cup of eggnog, but for those willing to let loose and embrace the festive chaos, it’s a show you’ll be laughing about after curtain down.
