MAGIC IN THE AIR: THE SECRET GARDEN BLOSSOMS AT REGENT’S PARK OPEN AIR THEATRE

What could be a more perfect venue for a production of The Secret Garden than Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre? A play about a secret garden taking place in an outdoor theatre, what a setting! As a fan of the film, and my friend loving the book, our expectations were very high. And I can happily say they were definitely met. My friend even messaged me the next day, still enchanted by the performance and the whole open-air experience.

Spoilt and abandoned, 10-year-old Mary Lennox is sent from India to Yorkshire and put into the care of an uncle she has never met. At Misselthwaite Manor, a broken-hearted house full of secrets and strange noises, Mary discovers a garden as lost and neglected as she is. If she can learn to make friends with robins, grumpy gardeners, and a boy who speaks to animals, Mary might be able to bring more than just the garden back to life.

I was intrigued to see how they would depict the growing garden and it’s hidden secrets. The creative team had an interesting job ahead of them, but they did not disappoint. Coloured streamers and decorations were used to signify the blooming and growth of the garden. In the open-air setting, the visual transformation was even more impactful. The garden’s evolution was not just seen but felt, resonating with the audience on a sensory level that an indoor setting might lack.

The open-air setting of the theatre added an unmatched layer of enchantment to the performance. The natural backdrop seamlessly merged with the themes of nature and rebirth. At one point, a gentle breeze carried foliage through the air, enhancing the magic of the setting in a way that an indoor auditorium could never replicate. It felt at times like an immersive experience, making the transformation of the garden feel both real and deeply symbolic.

WHETHER A LONG-TIME FAN OR NEW TO THE SECRET GARDEN, THIS PRODUCTION OFFERS A FRESH TAKE ON A TIMELESS CLASSIC

I love the dual nature of the garden – as both a beautiful space and a powerful analogy. The garden’s physical transformation mirrored the emotional and psychological growth of the characters. The dual symbolism was brought to life with real finesse that it resonated deeply with both my friend and me. The garden is a metaphor for healing and renewal, beautifully illustrated through the innovative staging and heartfelt performances.

We were lucky to be blessed with gorgeous weather, which complimented the overall experience. However, I couldn’t help but emphasize with Hannah Khalique-Brown who plays Mary Lennox. Despite the heat, she donned her scarf, hat, and coat with dedication, reflecting the play’s winter start. Her portrayal of Mary’s journey from a spoiled, lonely orphan to a hopeful, compassionate child was both moving and convincing. The chemistry between the cast members also enhanced the narrative’s emotional impact, bringing the audience into their world.

Whether a long-time fan or new to The Secret Garden, this production offers a fresh take on a timeless classic. The combination of the open-air setting, creative staging, and outstanding performances creates a memorable and lingering experience. This production captures the essence of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved story in a way that feels both fresh and faithful. For those seeking a magical and emotionally rich theatrical experience, this production is an absolute must-see.
