SKULLS, SHIPWRECKS AND SERIOUSLY GOOD COCKTAILS

If there’s one thing I’m always here for, it’s a venue that fully commits to a theme. And Rhum Tavern doesn’t just commit… it dives headfirst into it. Tucked just off Oxford Street, this hidden cocktail bar feels like stepping straight into the hull of a pirate ship. We’re talking shelves lined with skulls, barrels stacked with rum bottles, and even skull-shaped toilet seats. Yes, really.

It’s immersive in a way that feels playful rather than gimmicky. There’s even a hidden Captain’s Quarters tucked behind a bookshelf (which you can hire out for private events), adding to that sense of discovery. From the moment you walk in, it feels like you’ve stumbled across something a little secret… and very unique.

DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES… BUT I SURE WILL

Cocktails here are not just drinks, they’re full-on theatrical moments. We tried a few, and each one came with its own little twist.

Pieces of Eight (£15) arrived topped with a house-made chocolate coin (with a banana chip underneath, which I happily ate too). They recommend taking a sip followed by a bite of the chocolate, and while it leans quite rich, it’s a fun, interactive touch that I did enjoy.

Dead Men Tell No Tales (£19) was an instant “I need that” moment. Served in a skull (I am very easily influenced by glassware), it’s their take on a Pornstar Martini. And as someone who will always order one, it was never going to miss. Sweet, punchy, and very easy to drink.

Then there’s The Inferno (£14), served in a coconut that’s literally set on fire. Get the name now?! Not my usual flavour profile, but Emma loved it, and honestly I was just as entertained by the presentation as the drink itself.

My standout though? The Tepache Rum Punch (£14). I didn’t expect it to be my favourite, but it absolutely was. Fresh, slightly spiced, and made using their own house-fermented tepache. They dehydrate their own fruit too, and it’s clear they take pride in doing as much in-house as possible, which really comes through in the quality.

A HIDDEN GEM WITH SERIOUS CHARACTER

Beyond the drinks, the whole experience is elevated by the team. We were looked after so well by Jamie, the head bartender, while Alex (their resident rum expert) crafted our drinks. There’s a real passion there, and it makes such a difference.

The music adds to the atmosphere without overpowering it, and the overall vibe just works. It’s the kind of place that feels perfect for a fun night out with friends, a date, or even a hen or stag do. I would absolutely return, and honestly I’m half tempted to lean fully in and show up in pirate attire next time. They even had proper leather pirate hats that they let us wear, which only added to the fun.

They’ve also got a new menu coming soon, along with an open charcoal grill at the end of the bar, which feels like a solid excuse for a return visit.

Rhum Tavern might be slightly tucked away, but it’s one of those spots that feels worth seeking out. It’s fun, it’s different, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. If you’re looking for a night out with great cocktails, immersive vibes, and a bit of theatrical flair, this is definitely one to add to your list.
