Steam At Home With Ping Pong Review

During lockdown many restaurants had to close their doors and customers had to say goodbye to their favourite dishes. Many restaurants started creating meal kits that would allow customers to enjoy their meals at home. Ping Pong are no different, allowing customers to enjoy their dim sum with their Steam at Home boxes. A selection of handmade restaurant dim sum created by Ping Pong chefs at affordable prices and ready to cook as soon as it arrives.

Ping Pong allows you to order a selection of 15 of their most popular dim sum from their website. They have a range of gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options so there should be something for everyone. Additionally, you can buy different oils and dipping sauces, choose from a selection of teas and order tableware. Most excitingly for me was that you can also order your own bamboo steamer which made the cooking experience feel more authentic. The dim sum is quick and easy to cook and can also be done on the hob, microwave or oven.

Dim sum prices start at £5.34 for 6 Vegetable Spring Rolls, which are suitable for vegans. The most expensive item is £9.85 for a half rack of Honey Glazed Spare Ribs which are gluten free. There is a minimum order value of £30 on the dim sum, with a £6 shipping fee. However, delivery is free on orders over £42 and if you order by 2pm on weekdays it will arrive the next day. Each product has a shelf life of four days and is shipped in thermal packaging to maintain the temperature.

I ordered my dim sum before 2pm as suggested and it arrived the next day as expected. I chose not to order any additional tableware aside from the Bamboo Steamer as I have my own Sushi set. The dim sum products arrived in microwavable containers whilst the ribs and chicken came in vacuum sealed bags. Ping Pong recommend 3-4 portions per person, which works out to be 12 pieces of dim sum. I had the dim sum with my housemate and kept some aside to eat over the next few days.

Alongside the delivery you receive a Ping Pong booklet that includes the cooking instructions and storage details. It details ingredients, allergen information and serving suggestions. Most of the dim sum can be cooked in the microwave but I was excited to try my hand at steaming. I did make some in the microwave as it was my first attempt steaming anything, just in case there were any issues. But for a first try I was pleasantly surprised and proud at just how well the food turned out.Steam At Home With Ping Pong Review

PING PONG TASTE TEST

The smells emanating from my kitchen between the steamer and the microwave was amazing. We were drooling over the smells and were hoping that they tasted just as good. And thankfully the cooking and steaming was a huge success, and we had a glorious meal. The Char Sui Buns were fluffy and full of flavour and you could taste that they were of restaurant quality. I was glad I ordered two portions as they made the perfect snack the following day.

I made a portion of the Smoked Chicken Chilli Wings plain in case the sauce was too spicy. The meat was moist and succulent, and the chilli wasn’t too overwhelming, but it was nice having the option of plain. The Honey Glazed Spare Ribs were the right contrast of sweet against the chilli of the chicken. You can’t go wrong with ribs and the meat was just falling off the bone.

I made the Traditional Prawn Har Gau in the microwave and unfortunately overdone them a little. They were still tasty, but the outer dumpling layer got a bit too sticky or fell off. The hearty chunks of prawns inside were not affected though and were really enjoyable. I went out on a limb when I chose the Prawn & Scallop Sticky Rice but they ended up being my favourite. The flavour mix of prawn and scallops against the sticky rice was a perfect fit.

I would definitely recommend ordering from Ping Pong’s Steam At Home range. I’d quite happily order a truck load of the Prawn & Scallop Stick Rice wraps; I was honestly obsessed. I would also definitely go for the Char Sui Buns again as the buns were light, fluffy and really tasty. I’m really glad they decided not to cancel the Steam At Home range once restaurants were able to reopen. I’m sure it won’t be long until I made my next Ping Pong Steam At Home order.

*My order with Ping Pong was received free of charge but this in no way impacted my opinion. All thoughts are my own and have not been affected by any outside influences
