BRING YOUR DANCING FEET FOR A SOUL STIRRING, GENDER BLENDING TRIUMPH

Ah, Camden Fringe—who doesn’t love the chaos and excitement of one of London’s favourite annual theatre events? So, dear reader, I was delighted to be able to check out the fabulous Beats + Strings: Soul Renaissance, a production from Kansas City that promised a unique live music experience with acoustic strings, electronic vibes and percussive beats. Yeah, count me in, Daddio!

Having visited a few soul and R&B shows when I was over in LA a few years ago and catching the Southern soul music vibe bug real bad, baby, I was absolutely chomping at the bit to see what this trio would bring to London on a very dry and hot Monday evening.

And bring it they did.

Let’s talk about the talent. On decks and keys, DJ D. Dot Professor—an award-winning beats artist, was nothing short of next-level. His rhythmic foundations and lush keyboard work gave the whole set a cinematic pulse, anchoring the strings in a modern, electronic soul-scape that felt fresh and urgent.

On violin, K’Tina – the undisputed Queen of the Violin, was mesmerising. I genuinely couldn’t take my eyes off her at points; her vibes were immaculate, her phrasing silky yet fierce, and when she took us to heaven with a sensational string arrangement, you felt every single note in your bones. My leg was twitch at some point, it was that good.

And then there was RMJ Music on cello, whom I affectionately dubbed “Cello Daddy” by the end of the night. He and K’Tina absolutely owned the stage together. His presence was charismatic, soulful, and commanding; between his rich, resonant tones and her soaring lines, the chemistry was electric. All three performers were outstanding, and their synergy was the beating heart of the show.

The trio consistently engaged with  the crowd – chatting, encouraging participation, inviting us into the soul of it all. For the shy Brits who are planning to go (and I highly recommend that you do!) – With shows like this, when K’Tina is taking you to heaven, you are absolutely encouraged to let her know whilst she’s playing. Trust me, you’ll love it!  That’s what I love about shows like this, it’s an energy exchange between the stage and the floor. The energy felt so GOOD that I took myself from near the back to the front row to immerse myself further. And honestly? It was worth it.

So, no, I don’t think they’re in Kansas anymore, Toto. But my goodness, I am delighted they decided to drop some soul and R&B into the Camden Fringe. Come visit us again soon, please. London needs more of this fire.
