THROUGHOUT THIS DISPLAY OF YOUNG ARTISTRY, COUNTLESS MOMNETS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION

Before I saw the National Youth Music Theatre’s Christmas Celebration at Sinfonia Smith Square, I struggled to get into the festive spirit. I couldn’t believe that this year is nearly over! This production saw NYMT members, aged between 10 and 23, showcasing their musical talents through performances of their work from the previous year and some Christmas classics for good measure. It’s safe to say that my excitement for festivities was very quickly reignited.

Throughout this display of young artistry, countless moments left a lasting impression. One highlight for me was the Christmas songs medley performed before the interval. Hearing beautiful vocals harmonised together as a blend of familiar favourites was sung in unison was amazing and moving. Another unforgettable moment for me was the NYMT’s rendition of Madness’ ‘Baggy Trousers’. The song’s mischievousness was perfectly portrayed as members danced and sang throughout the audience. It was bags of fun and a joy to watch. I could carry on picking standout moments, but I fear I would end up detailing each performance from the evening. I, of course, have to commend the musicians of the NYMT orchestra, who flawlessly and beautifully brought each song to life. From the leading vocalists to the drummer, each NYMT member was exceptional and easily matched up to the show’s enchanting venue of Sinfonia Smith Square.

Short speeches from present and previous company members along with staff about their experiences and the successes of NYMT were featured between the musical performances. Alumni Rosy Church and Callum Scott-Howells made appearances to reminisce about their time at NYMT and performed themselves, which was delightful. While it was interesting to hear about the NYMT members’ positive experiences, I felt the show would’ve been more impactful with fewer of them. Every so often, it felt slightly unnecessary to talk so much about the company’s success when their members’ talent spoke for itself so clearly. A few times, I was just waiting to enjoy the next song!

Overall, I was inspired and blown away by the NYMT performers’ musical capabilities and passion for their craft. They all exhibited talent and charm well beyond their years and their hard work in making the performances special definitely paid off. I’m excited to see what they all get up to in the future!
