From the very first moment the curtain falls, the audience is transported into what could be otherwise known as their very own contemporary R&B Spotify playlist where body, movement and dance collide. This is all against the backdrop of simple mood lighting, the Alvin Ailey American Dance troupe deliver a performance that is nothing short of extraordinary.

Presented at the iconic Sadlers Wells, this mixed bill programme showcases a world of mesmerising artistry and breathtaking performances thanks to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Mixed Bill.

The Mixed Bill program is a testament to the diversity and versatility of the company, showcasing a range of dance styles and narratives that are both thought-provoking and emotionally charged. Each piece is meticulously crafted, with choreography that pushes the boundaries of what is possible, expertly executed by the gifted ensemble of dancers.

As the dancers take the stage, their bodies become instruments, effortlessly conveying a spectrum of emotions. From the powerful and dynamic movements in “Revelations,” to the ethereal grace of “Lazarus,” the energy on stage is palpable, evoking both awe and inspiration.

The lighting design and stage production further enhance the already mesmerising performances, creating a visual feast for the senses. The interplay of light and shadow adds depth and dimension to the choreography, enhancing the emotional impact of each movement. The costumes are meticulously designed, adding an additional layer of artistry to the performance, and accentuating the lines and shapes created by the dancers.

One of the standout pieces of the evening is “Grace,” a contemporary ballet that seamlessly blends classical technique with modern sensibilities. The dancers move with a fluidity and grace that is elegant, moving and a true testament to the incredible talent and versatility of the cast.

Another highlight of the Mixed Bill is “Revelations,” a timeless masterpiece that has become the company’s signature work. This iconic piece explores the African-American experience through a series of powerful vignettes set to spiritual music. The energy and passion displayed by the dancers in this piece are truly electrifying, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.

But it is “Lazarus” that truly steals the show. Choreographed by the brilliant Rennie Harris, this piece is a celebration of the life and legacy of Alvin Ailey himself.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Mixed Bill is at Sadler’s Wells Theatre from Tuesday 5 – Saturday 16 September. Alvin Ailey’s second company Ailey 2 starts a 12-venue Dance Consortium UK tour on Tuesday 19 September.

Acclaimed choreographer Kyle Abraham’s newest work celebrates Black culture, Black music, and the youthful spirit that perseveres in us all. Scored to a “mixtape” of soul, hip-hop, and R&B, it highlights the bridge between music, communication, and personal memory.

Revelations by Alvin Ailey

Using African-American spirituals, song sermons, gospel songs and holy blues, Alvin Ailey’s Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. Ailey described the memories that inspired Revelations as “blood memories” because they were so strong, that he felt they were part of him as much as the blood that ran through his veins.

More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans. Seeing Revelations for the first time or the hundredth can be a transcendent experience, with audiences cheering, singing along and dancing in their seats from the opening notes of the plaintive “I Been ’Buked” to the rousing “Wade in the Water” and the triumphant finale, “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.” It is no surprise that it is the most widely seen modern dance work in the world.
