Witness For The Prosecution Review – London County Hall
For five years Agatha Christie’s Witness For The Prosecution has called London’s County Hall its home. With their seventh cast being announced last month I finally got around to seeing this unique production. Having been on my bucket list for a while I was excited to see the distinctive venue and show. Leonard Vole is accused of murdering a widow to inherit her wealth. The stakes are high – will Leonard survive the shocking witness testimony; will he be able to convince the jury, and you of his innocence and escape the hangman’s noose?
Stepping inside London County Hall you are immediately immersed into the experience. The theatre used to be the council chamber of the London County Council until they dissolved in 1986. You have the option of booking standard seats, which are comfortable leather seats. Or you can book a seat on the jury and play an active role in the production. The majesty of the chamber gives a sense of responsibility, and the action on stage seamlessly blends into the historic venue.
The majority of the scenes are set in Central Criminal Court of England, also known as the Old Bailey. You go through the trial of Leonard Vole and it’s up to the jury to decide if he is guilty or not. One of the main witnesses is Leonard’s wife, Romaine, and boy does she leave you wondering. Romaine holds the key piece of evidence as she is Leonard’s alibi or is she. Lauren O’Neil puts in an amazing performance as she leaves the audience wondering what the truth in her statement is.
The climax, which I won’t be spoiling for anyone, is a must see! I was so invested in finding out whether Leonard was guilty or not. And I was not disappointed by the finale, even if I didn’t expect it to unfold the way it did. Witness For The Prosecution is a gripping play that I would recommend booking tickets for.
