Acid’s Reign Review – The Pleasance

A DAZZLING, THOUGHT-PROVOKING TRIUMPH: ACID’S REIGN SETS THE STAGE ABLAZE

By Emma Carney | Bunny Pudding · Digital Coven · @bunnyscopes ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Press Invite

Acid’s Reign is not just a musical, it’s also a call for revolution. When I first heard that it was a show about climate change queering and querying the climate discourse’ I was unsure what to expect, it could either be the most fabulous show ever or a complete, well, drag. Fortunately for me, it was a fabulous foray into a subject that for many of us, we need to alot more seriously.

From the moment the lights dim this bold, unapologetic production grabs you by the wig and refuses to let go. A daring blend of drag, cabaret, and climate activism, this show is a glittering call to arms that challenges the way we think about the climate crisis.

At its core, Acid’s Reign is a story of resistance, resilience, and the power of collective action but only if we stay true to ourselves and our messages. The Climate Queens, a fierce drag supergroup, are the beating heart of the show, fighting not just for their future, but for ours…and we’re not listening. Their battle against the cunning and corporate-fueled Alex Acid (played by the talented Joshua Oakes-Rogers) is as much a clash of ideologies as it is a spectacle of wit, charm, and sheer theatrical brilliance.

The cast are fantastic and endearing which helps you really care about their internal plight as well as our very big shared one…Drag Race UK’s Scarlett Harlett shines as Dina Mite, bringing equal parts vulnerability and ferocity to their role. Gigi Zahir’s  intense and empowered portrayal of Ria Listic acts as the moral anchor in the story, they know their mission, even if everyone else may be making concessions. While Sé Carr as Mickey deliver scene-stealing performances that balance humor and heart. I was furious, simply furious I tell thee at a scene involving a jacket. How dare they?! Ash Weir’s Olive is delightfully hippy, sweet and a poignant emotional core…their speed singing is also NEXT level. OMG. Together, they form an ensemble that feels electric, united, and utterly unforgettable.

The soundtrack is a triumph in its own right, seamlessly weaving original compositions with jukebox favorites. The band were also part of the cast and there were some very funny moments involving them. The musical theatre nods to Cabaret and Company add a layer of nostalgic brilliance, while the original compositions pulse with urgency and hope.

Visually, Acid’s Reign is a feast for the senses. Caitlin Mawhinney’s design is a kaleidoscope of color and creativity, while Catja Hamilton’s lighting design amplifies the show’s emotional beats with stunning precision.

What truly sets Acid’s Reign apart, though, is its message. In a world where the climate crisis often feels overwhelming, this musical dares to ask: How are you planning to save the world? It doesn’t offer easy answers, but it does remind us that our voices matter—and that sometimes, the most radical act is simply refusing to stay silent. Whilst the ending felt very open ended, that was sort of the point…the crisis has no end and we as a collective to keep pushing and be practicing what the Climate Queens had been preaching.

With its razor-sharp wit, breathtaking performances, and unshakable heart, Acid’s Reign is a must-see. It’s a show that doesn’t just entertain—it inspires, provokes, and ignites. Long live the Climate Queens, and long live this extraordinary production. I will now fully commit to the eco mission!

Acid’s Reign is currently showing at Pleasance Theatre until Saturday 1 March.
