A FASCINATING ARRANGEMENT OF BOLD EXPLORATION AND CONSTANT EVOLUTION IN THE ARTISTIC PROCESS

Curated by Maria do Carmo M. P. de Pontes, We Lost Lots of Beautiful Things presents the works of Theodore Ereira-Guyer and Jandyra Waters, who passed away earlier this year. Despite the artists’ practices taking place decades apart, the exhibition showcases their commonalities, from their transnational experiences between the UK and Brazil to the similar ages at which they produced the work on display.

Jandyra Waters’ works that we see in We Lost Lots of Beautiful Things cement her status as a pioneer of abstractionism in Brazil. Using a style broadly associated with the Tachisme movement, the spontaneity in the brushwork is evident in her paintings. This marks an interesting shift toward greater exploration in her work and a deepening search for her own voice. It’s this commitment to process and urge to push boundaries that is essential to this exhibition as a whole.

Theodore Ereira-Guyer’s works in this exhibition showcase the evolution of his practice, now incorporating pieces made from etched plaster layered with coloured glass, sourced from Germany’s Glasshütte Lamberts, on top. Experimenting with materials is familiar to Ereira-Guyer, as he has previously used organic substances such as seeds in his work. The glass is reflective, obscuring and refracting the images etched on the plaster underneath. This display of his artistic experimentation and interest in the elusiveness of memory is particularly striking. With this interplay of transparency and concealment, his work invites viewers to consider how memory and perception are constantly evolving over time.

Walking into the exhibition, you’ll find smaller works from both artists paired along one wall, and larger works on the other. The larger works, such as Waters’ Untitled, are especially impactful as they accentuate the space. The smaller works are thoughtfully arranged in pairs not to compare the artists to each other, but to celebrate their shared sensibilities and mutual resonance.

We Lost Lots of Beautiful Things honours two artists united by a sensitivity to their process and materials. While both Waters and Ereira-Guyer have a distinctive style, this exhibition underscores their affinities and creates a dialogue between their practices. It is a fascinating arrangement of bold exploration and constant evolution in the artistic process.
