Stepping into the enchanting world of Sadler’s Wells for my inaugural dance show experience, I found myself utterly enthralled UniVerse: A Dark Crystal Odyssey by Wayne McGregor. This production, much more than a mere display of talent, transcended conventional performance boundaries, immersing the audience in a thought-provoking journey.

As the curtains rose, the stage transformed into a captivating tableau, depicting a planet in the throes of turmoil, mirroring the urgent realities of our climate crisis. Drawing inspiration from Jim Henson’s iconic “The Dark Crystal,” the production seamlessly intertwined fantasy with the stark truths of our world, inviting viewers to ponder the delicate balance between nature and humanity.

The visual spectacle was nothing short of breathtaking, with cutting-edge technology bringing to life stunning digital vistas that seamlessly merged with avant-garde costumes, creating an otherworldly ambience. Each movement, each spoken word, expertly delivered by Isaiah Hull, added depth to the narrative, guiding the audience through a poignant exploration of our interconnectedness with the natural world.

Company Wayne McGregor’s exceptional dancers, under the visionary direction of Wayne McGregor, served as conduits for this exploration, their performances transcending mere choreography to embody the very essence of the human experience. Their movements spoke volumes, conveying emotions that resonated deeply with every member of the audience.

Behind the scenes, a team of visionary creatives worked tirelessly to bring this ambitious production to life. From Joel Cadbury’s evocative compositions to Philip Delamore’s visionary costume designs, each collaborator contributed their unique talents, adding layers of brilliance to the immersive experience. For a first show, it was certainly something I hadn’t experienced before!

“UniVerse: A Dark Crystal Odyssey” stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and artistic innovation. A co-production between Studio Wayne McGregor and The Royal Ballet, in association with The Jim Henson Company, the production received generous support from Brenda Leff, whose commitment to the arts made this transformative journey possible.

Reflecting on my “UniVerse: A Dark Crystal Odyssey” experience, I couldn’t help but marvel at the seamless integration of art and technology, the poignant storytelling, and the undeniable talent of all involved. Truly, it was an unforgettable odyssey into the heart of transformation, one that will stay with me for years to come.
