The Murder Express Review – Pedley Street Station
Funicular Productions are back at Pedley Street Station with their latest Immersive Theatre and Onboard Dining experience, The Murder Express. Taking their guests back to the early 20th century when travelling by train for pleasure was in its infancy. A journey from London to Murdér, France takes a dark turn when one of the passengers is found dead. And it’s up to you the guests to work out who exactly the murderer is.
Pedley Street Station opened in May 2018 and have hosted a number of different immersive theatre and dining experiences. Upon arriving at Pedley Street, you will be directed to the Seven Sins platform bar. In line with COVID safety guidelines you can order a drink using a table service app. You will be asked to remain at your table until you board and the waiters will come to you.
The Train Conductor will tell you when it is time to board and you will board one table at a time. There is a maximum of six seats at one table in line with the current rule of six. If you are a party of two then you will share the table with another two but separated by Perspex screens. The safety guidelines were clear, straight forward and we felt very safe and protected during the experience.
The story itself plays out on board the train carriage with the cast taking you on an interactive journey. They manage to transport you to another time and give you the feeling of truly being on a moving train. The story breaks for each of the four courses but in a way that flows with the plot. It’s planned out really well to be a constant flowing narrative and the cast work around the timings so effectively.
The four-course menu was created by MasterChef 2017 finalist Louisa Ellis and starts with an Amuse Bouche of Celeriac and Truffle Soup. There is a vegan alternative to dishes and Funicular Productions cater really well to those of us with dietary requirements. You simply need to make them aware in advance and they will make sure that you are taken care of.
The show has a small cast, but each actor is worth their weight in gold truly embracing their character. As the plot centres around the murder they do well to keep you guessing as to who the culprit is. We spent a great deal of the evening laughing, smiling and it was just a great break from our current reality. I would quite happily go back and relive the entire experience tomorrow.
The whole experience is two hours long and food is included within the cost of your ticket. The Murder Express runs from Wednesday to Sunday until 31st January 2021 with ticket prices starting at £60. You can dress up and embrace the spirit of the early 20th century or just stick with your favourite go-to outfit. Either way you are in for a great evening of incredible food, a fun atmosphere and a mystery to solve.
