PERFECT FOR MATES, DATES AND SOLO SKATES

Get your skates on folks, we’re going to a roller disco! Roller Nation, home to London’s purpose-built roller skating nightclub, offers everything you need for a fun, alternative night out.

Entering the venue, located in Tottenham, you are greeted immediately with fun vibes. 70s and 80s disco music pumps through the sound system as you take in the space. A large roller rink is the central feature with booths and tables surrounding it, making it a perfect set up for people watching. The booths are also fantastic for when you need to take a break. Even though roller skating is low intensity, it is still a workout as recorded by my FitBit!

Completing the venue is a large bar area and a kitchen, offering a decent menu of drinks and food. While we didn’t try the food, the menu of American-style classics like hamburgers, hot dogs and special fries looked very appealing and were reasonably priced.

We arrived a little bit after the 7pm opening time. It was quiet when we first arrived but this turned out to be a great idea as we were able to warm up without fear of crashing into anyone. Skates are provided and protective equipment such as knee pads is also available, which is reassuring for anyone particularly nervous about skating.

The skating itself was extremely fun. Having not roller skated since about the age of 8, I was a bit nervous and stiff starting off. However, we warmed up quickly and soon felt quite comfortable zipping around the rink. In fact, it felt rather therapeutic going around in circles. The music and the DJ set a really good, fun atmosphere; getting the crowd to change direction every so often. The stewards on the rink were also wonderful, helping anyone who was struggling and even giving short demos to people before they started. The low pressure vibe of the rink makes it accessible to anyone, regardless of skill level. And in contrast to ice skating, you won’t get wet if you fall!

As the evening progressed, the rink became busier and the more seasoned skaters came out. It was super fun watching them doing their thing with crazy (at least to me) moves. Overall, it was a super inviting and enjoyable atmosphere. As the rink got busier, you definitely had to focus more, particularly when going around the corners. However, everyone was courteous and respectful of space. What’s great about a venue like Roller Nation is everyone is there to have a good time, which is felt throughout the evening.

I’m a huge fan of doing something different and trying new things so this was the perfect Friday night out alternative to the pub. My only note would be, as the music is quite loud, it wouldn’t be the best place for a first date. Other than that, if you are looking for something different to do whether on a date, with mates or if you’re wanting to try out a new hobby, then Roller Nation should definitely be on your list.
