PENQUIN PRIDE LONDON COMES TO LONDON ON THE EVE OF THE STONEWALL RIOTS
Penguin Pride London will give an eclectic mix of writers, poets and activists a platform to present their work at the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern
TICKETS: Vauxhall Tavern
This summer, Penguin will be turning up the volume on some of the most exciting queer voices of the future by taking a line-up of awe-inspiring writers, poets, performers and activists on tour to venues in London, Liverpool and Manchester.
On 27 June, on the eve of the Stonewall riots, Penguin Pride London will give an eclectic mix of writers, poets and activists a platform to present their work at the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Hosted by the sensational Crystal Rasmussen, author of Diary of a Drag Queen, the evening will also see performances and readings from Paul Flynn, Emma Morgan plus more to be announced.
Later in the summer we’ll be at Tate Liverpool on 26 July, celebrating the museum’s Keith Haring exhibition with a free programme of readings and performances. Then in Manchester on 21 August, with an uplifting evening of readings and performances from established voices from the queer community as well as a new generation of LGBT authors.
Zainab Juma, Creative Manager at Penguin, said: “50 years on from the Stonewall Riots, we want to celebrate and honour the memory of the people who stood up for themselves and their communities on Christopher Street in 1969, and all the people who have fought for LGBT progress ever since. Against this backdrop, and with a fantastic lineup of some of the most exciting queer British writers and activists today, our mantra for this year’s Penguin Pride tour is TURN UP: turn up for our LGBT family; turn up for LGBT rights; and turn up the volume on LGBT voices.”
Crystal Rasmussen said “It’s a real pleasure to be hosting the London chapter of Penguin’s Pride this year. Around Pride it can often feel like people want to slap a rainbow on something and sell it to us queers. But this series of events is about platforming and profiling queer writers and talents, letting them speak for themselves. That’s what’s always been at the core of Pride — even back when it was a protest. I can’t bloody wait to watch and listen to my peers take up space in a place as iconic as the RVT. It’s gonna be gorj!”
Penguin Pride is produced by Penguin Live and in partnership with Gay Times
