Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre presents an immersive and electrifying take on the classic musical. Against a colourful and bold stage setup, the show takes the audience on a thrilling journey from Broadway to Havana. And marking it’s one-year anniversary at the Bridge Theatre, the show recently announced their second cast line up. Under the direction of Nicholas Hytner, this production breathes new life into Damon Runyon’s timeless characters.

The addition of new cast members adds fresh energy to the already stellar lineup. Owain Arthur’s portrayal of Nathan Detroit was giving me Nathan Lane in Sex In The City, just me? He infused the character with irresistible charm and had great charisma. Timmika Ramsay shone as the new Miss Adelaide, bringing great energy and a soulful voice that added depth to the character. And whilst Celinde Schoenmaker has undeniable talent and powerful vocals, I did find her operatic voice occasionally felt mismatched in duets and harmonies.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the production is the immersive standing stage area. Being amidst the action, sometimes even on the stage itself, adds an exciting layer to the theatrical experience. It offers the audience members a unique perspective of the performance. Don’t worry if you get stuck behind a group of tall people, as the stage platforms raise for the performance. Security ensures that everyone is moved around appropriately throughout.

AN UNFORGETTABLE THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE THAT IS SURE TO LEAVE AUDIENCES FASCINATED

However, this immersive experience can be intimidating at time, particularly for those in the front row. With dance routines often bringing performers close to the edge of the stage, there’s a sense of exhilaration mixed with trepidation. As legs fly above and actions unfold mere inches away it’s a rollercoaster of emotions. While this adds to the intensity of the performance, it may not be suitable for those who prefer a more traditional theatre experience.

Considering the unique nature of the immersive standing area, I would recommend experiencing it at least once for its novelty. However, for those who may find it overwhelming or are concerned about standing for so long, seated tickets are available. I would love an option of a combined seated and standing ticket for the different acts of the show. It would be a chance to get the best of both worlds and look at the show from different perspectives.

Overall, Guys and Dolls delivers an unforgettable theatrical experience that is sure to leave audiences fascinated. The show pushes the boundaries redefining the theatrical experience with its unique immersive production. With its dynamic performances an innovative staging, this production remains a must see for theatre enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
