FOR THE LACK OF LAURA: A PROMISING BUT UNEVEN MUSICAL JOURNEY

There’s something undeniably charming about For the Lack of Laura, a new folk-infused musical that blends Irish mysticism, time travel, and romantic destiny into one ambitious package. While the show stumbles in pacing and narrative, its performers and melodic score make it a pleasant, if imperfect, night at the theatre.

The opening 15 minutes suffer from heavy exposition—telling rather than showing—which makes the initial world-building feel clunky. However, once Laura strikes her Faustian bargain with the sorceress Gwendolethe, the story gains momentum. Laura’s impulsive decision to trade mortality for eternal youth whilst she searches for her one true love and adventure might seem questionable, but then again, haven’t we all made reckless choices in our early twenties? The script could benefit from sharper character motivation and a bit of editing. 

The show’s greatest strength lies in its cast. Jane Patterson is charming as Laura, balancing wide-eyed wonder with a voice that effortlessly navigates Kurt Rosenberg’s folk  score. Emma Daly shines as Laura’s best friend Maggie, providing much-needed comic relief with impeccable timing. Lombardo’s Gwendolethe is a scene-stealer, blending campy villainy with vexed menace.

The 26-song soundtrack has its highs and lows. A few numbers, particularly Laura’s yearning solos and the witch’s theatrical moments stand out. The plot follows well-trodden fantasy-romance tropes: a restless heroine, magical bargains, and suitors from different eras (a bullfighter, a poet, a revolutionary, oh my!). While the premise is fun, the storytelling feels surface-level—Laura’s suitors are thinly sketched, and their instant devotion to her lacks emotional weight. The most engaging subplot belongs to Molly and Patrick (Brian May), whose sweet, grounded romance outshines the main storyline. And to be honest I am a cynic so I am not really partial to tales around seeking soulmates etc. 

Visually, the production is a mixed bag. The astral projection effects clash with the Irish folklore aesthetic, veering into cheap sci-fi rather than enchantment. The staging relies heavily on blackouts and clunky transitions. It’s DIY-esque but I am kinda into it.

For the Lack of Laura is at its best when it embraces its whimsical, fairy-tale heart. While the book needs tightening and the pacing is a bit up and down, there’s enough charm here, especially in the performances. It’s an entertaining, family-friendly experience.
