A ROYAL RIOT OF LAUGHTER: DIANA: THE UNTOLD AND UNTRUE STORY

From the moment Diana emerged onto the stage to the final bow, “Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story” had the audience in stitches with its chaotic blend of comedy, irreverence, and sheer theatrical brilliance. As someone who entered the theatre with high hopes and left with sides sore from laughter, I can confidently say that this production is an absolute gem that left me eagerly anticipating a return visit. It was just fabulous!

From the outset, it was clear that this was no ordinary retelling of Princess Diana’s life. Led by the incomparable Linus Karp in the titular role, the cast delivered a masterclass in comedic timing and character portrayal, breathing new life into familiar figures with their boundless energy, high camp and infectious enthusiasm. Joseph Martin’s portrayal of various characters, including Prince Charles and Camilla, elicited roars of laughter from the audience, and their performance of Queen Camilla was for sure a standout. Geri Allen’s depiction of the Queen was a delightful blend of regal poise and sharp wit, the side glances toward the audience just added to the experience.  There is another core co-star that needs some applause, as the audience gets to be involved within the storytelling which is a delightful cherry on top of an already engaging show.

But it was Karp’s performance as Diana that truly stole the show. With a twinkle in their eye and a flair for the dramatic, Karp embodied the essence of the beloved peoples princess with such authenticity and charm that it was impossible not to be swept away by their bambu eyed, gentle wristed portrayal. Whether recounting outrageous anecdotes from Diana’s afterlife adventures or engaging in witty banter with the audience, Karp had us hanging on their every word, eager for more. This is truly a feat when you consider they are in some cases acting against cardboard cut-outs.

What truly set this production apart, however, was its fearless embrace of the absurd. From drag performances to puppetry, multimedia elements to audience interaction, “Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story” spared no expense in delivering an unforgettable theatrical experience that kept us on the edge of our seats. Each scene was a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the production team, who seamlessly wove together elements of comedy and spectacle to create a show that was as visually stunning as it was laugh-out-loud funny. Even a mid show mishap was turned into a triumph by the teams professional hands.

As the final show sadly ended and the applause echoed throughout the theatre, I found myself already planning my next visit to see “Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story” again.  I even brought merch, which if you know me, is very rare as I’m usually by the bar. I brought my American friend, Diana (who, for a random fact, has seen the Diana musical about 123 times at times at this point) a Diana The Untold and Untrue script book from the Kings Head Theatre which Karp was kind enough to sign. I liked it that much.

Rarely have I encountered a production that so effortlessly blends humour, heart, and sheer entertainment value. If you’re in need of a good laugh and a night of pure joy, do yourself a favour and book your tickets now. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
