Simpson’s in the Strand

To add a touch of theatre to Valentine’s Day guests at Simpson’s in the Strand can order

28 days dry aged roast rib of Scottish (£38) from the silver domed trolley which is wheeled ceremoniously to the table and carved in front of the guests. While this tradition began to ensure that that chess players could be served at their tables without interrupting their concentration on game, today it adds a fun spectacle to a romantic Valentine’s Date. The performance continues with a Baked Alaska (£16) of vanilla ice-cream with mixed candied fruits, cranberry sauce and an impressive brandy flambé.

After dinner, the Knight’s Bar beckons with winter cocktails such as a crisp and dry Mineral Martini (Vodka, oyster shell, dry sherry, sea essence – £15) or the rich and luscious Fig (Bourbon, fig, spice, lemon, wormwood –  £14) offering a tempting night cap.

Beaufort Bar:

The dramatic jet-black and burnished gold décor of the romantic Beaufort Bar exudes the glamour of a time when stars graced the renowned cabaret stage at The Savoy. Its newly launched Music, Magic and Drama menu celebrates this theatrical history and it’s ‘Music’ section is designed for the early evening  and evokes the bubbly, sociable and expectant mood felt at the start of a night out through a menu of light mixed drinks. This section also features an impressive selection of vintage and non-vintage champagne available by the glass and bottle.

For those looking to prolong the evening in the Beaufort Bar, guests can choose cocktails from the Magic and Drama sections. The former uses mystifying techniques in the construction of its drinks, as well as liquids that have been manipulated on the way to the bottle through added botanicals, fermentation or fortification. The latter focuses on dark, atmospheric drinks that take guests late into the evening and explores the more potent spirits such as whisky, Calvados, Armagnac, grappa and Cognac.
