One of the standout productions in the Tethered Wits 2023 Open Air Tours is the rendition of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s renowned tale, “The Great Gatsby,” brought to life at The Actors Church in Covent Garden. Set against the backdrop of the 1920s, this performance vividly portrayed the story’s extravagant parties, complex relationships, and underlying tragedies.

The open-air ambience of The Actors Church significantly contributed to the overall experience. With limited seating and no microphones, the performance felt natural and immersive. The cast of five actors showcased their talents, handling multiple roles and engaging the audience with their acting, singing, dancing, and mimicry skills.

I particularly enjoyed the performances of Deakin Van Leeuwen, who portrayed Tom Buchanan, and Oliver Stockley, who embodied Nick Carraway. Their versatility, multi-talents, and emotional depth made the characters come alive on stage. They conveyed the characters’ emotions effectively, and I felt a strong connection to their stories.

The incorporation of live music further enriched the atmosphere, perfectly capturing the essence of the Jazz Age. The story is seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway, who becomes part of the glamorous world of Jay Gatsby’s parties, ultimately uncovering the disillusionment beneath the surface.

The stage, nestled in the courtyard of The Actors Church, embraced an intimate and inviting setting. With minimal seating, it felt like a cosy summer night at an outdoor theatre. The actors didn’t use microphones, allowing their voices to blend with the sounds of the night. This enhanced the play’s relaxed and natural feel. The actors went beyond acting – they sang, danced, tap-danced, and even engaged in mimicry. This dynamic performance added to the show’s excitement.

Adding to the experience, the Tethered Wits Theatre Company is making a meaningful impact by raising money for a charity called Focus, which supports people with cancer and their families.

In conclusion, Tethered Wits Theatre Company’s rendition of “The Great Gatsby” provided a relaxed and enchanting evening, seamlessly transporting the audience to the lavish yet tragic world of the 1920s.
