The Gillian Lynne Theatre, once hailed as the ‘theatre for the future’, has brought to life a modern day musical seamlessly weaving together past and present hardships, love and explores the intricacies of family relationships. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” by Richard Hawley and Chris Bush is set against the backdrop of Sheffield’s iconic Park Hill flats, telling the story of three households within the estate across three different time periods spanning 1960 – 2015. Jumping through the timelines we gradually get to know the story of each person living in those flats, the decisions bringing them to Park Hill; migration, loss, and success and their reasons for leaving.

The set is intentionally simple; a kitchen, dining room and living room layout, brought to life by the characters’ story and allowing the audience’s imagination to complete the design. At times, the stories are told simultaneously, as we watch them go about commonplace activities; such as dinner time. The choreography of those scenes are flawless, and an ingenious way to connect these three seemingly unconnected families, whilst carefully and playfully bringing generational, cultural and class differences to light. Offering a unique perspective on the evolution of a community and the enduring human connections within it.

We’re taking through the highs and lows of modern day life, not just through the superb acting, but through the music composed by Richard Hawley’s, each piece elevating the mood of the scene; from retro pop melodies, to sombre, resonating lyrics. The live band brings the play to life, alongside the dancers running throughout the stalls, adding to the tension and accelerating the powerful performances on stage. The energy brought by the dancers often reflects the changing times and adds a multi-sensory layer to an already powerful, skin tingling scene.

The lead cast is exceptional, at conveying their characters’ unique personalities and emotions, bringing elements of comedy, depression, anxiety, happiness and euphoria Throughout the 2 hour performance, I was taken through an emotional rollercoaster, as I’m drawn into the characters’ often relatable struggles, victories, and the complex relationships that define their characters’ lives.
