Watching Rachael Sage perform live at PizzaExpress Live at The Pheasantry felt like spending an evening with someone who genuinely lives and breathes creativity. The venue itself was absolutely stunning! Intimate, warm and beautiful in a way that instantly sets the tone for a special night. Honestly, anything that happened in that setting probably would have felt magical, but Rachael Sage elevated it even further.

The performance celebrated songs across her huge 20-album catalogue and what struck me most was just how much of a creative powerhouse she is. Not only can she sing beautifully but she also plays piano and guitar, while producing, mixing and mastering her own music too. At one point I genuinely found myself wondering how many hours she has in a day. There was something incredibly inspiring about seeing an artist so deeply involved in every layer of their craft.

One thing that weirdly stayed with me throughout the evening was her click. Every time she clicked (what I’m assuming was her metronome)  it honestly felt like she was waving a magical wand. It became part of the atmosphere and added to the whimsical energy of the night. Every song she performed felt like it could have featured in an episode of Glee. That theatrical, uplifting quality made complete sense when she later mentioned having years of voice-over experience throughout her career.

What I loved most was how much I learnt about her as a person through her music and storytelling. From speaking about a beautiful song she wrote with her father, who had lymphedema, to discussing the three albums she is currently mixing and mastering for release this year, everything felt deeply personal. She also spoke passionately about supporting women’s cancer research, something clearly very close to her heart as a survivor herself.

Rachael Sage creates feel good American folk music. Her range is extensive, her catalogue feels incredibly syncable for film and television, and she comes across as someone who genuinely cares about people and art equally. She also clearly loves a good outfit, so hopefully she doesn’t go too far over the 50kg luggage allowance across the next twenty tour dates.

If you enjoy American folk music with warmth, personality and storytelling, she is definitely an artist worth seeing live.
