A NOSTALGIC JOURNEY AT QUEER DIARY NIGHT

Would you dare to read your teenage diary aloud to a room full of people? At the Queer Diary event, a brave group of LGBTQIA+ adults did just that, revealing to a delighted audience their teenage angst, dreams, follies, and fabulousness in a night filled with nostalgia, solidarity, and all very relatable! 

The evening promised an array of earnest journal entries, long-lost love letters, fabulous fan-fiction, terrible Tumblr posts, and some cringey poetry – and it delivered on all fronts. Each reader brought a unique slice of their adolescent experience, painting a vivid, often poignant picture of what it meant to grow up queer. The raw honesty and vulnerability of the participants were met with supportive applause and laughter, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and understanding. 

The night didn’t end with the readings. The event transformed into a School Disco Afterparty, which went on until 1 AM. Attendees were invited to relive their end-of-term discos, but this time without the adolescent awkwardness, instead bring your unique queer social awkwardness! There was even a little tuc shop at the back of the event to really elevate the back to school vibes.

A TOUCHING, UPLIFTING EXPERIENCE THAT BROUGHT THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN A CELEBRATION OF THEIR SHARED HISTORIES AND INDIVIDUAL JOURNEYS

The Queer Diary event was meticulously organised to be an inclusive and safe space. A limited number of open-mic spots allowed more voices to be heard, adding to the diversity of stories shared. The event was queer-led and queer-centered, with allies (ALLY!) welcomed warmly. It had very good accessibility but for future reference for the autistics in the audience who really like to work to a schedule, it’s doors open at 7.30 and it starts around 8.30. 

The staging was great with great seating options so everyone had a view with deaf and blind descriptions, subtitles in the background. The hosts even took time to make sure everyone in the audience had a clear view, these considerations really do have an impact so kudos to them! 

Overall, the Queer Diary night was a touching, uplifting, and thoroughly enjoyable experience. It brought the LGBTQIA+ community together in a celebration of their shared histories and individual journeys. It certainly made me go home and revisit some of my own old diaries. Eeek!
