Queenz – The Show With Balls! Tour Review – The Arts Theatre
Have you heard about the trailblazing, life affirming drag extravaganza that is taking the UK by storm? Well look no further as I’m here to tell you all about Queenz – The Show With Balls. Running from 1 to 4 December at London’s Arts Theatre I was able to catch the show at their finale performance. But have no fear, you haven’t missed your chance as Queenz – The Show With Balls is touring the UK in 2023.
Queenz – The Show With Balls showcases five drag queens who have come together to create an iconic girl group. Staring Bella Du Ball (Ben Sell), Billie Eyelash (Luke Hall), Candy Caned (Josh Hanson), Dior Monte (Jaymi Hensley), and Zeze Van Cartier (Lew Ray). You may recognise Jaymi Hensley from X Factor and as a member of pop group Union J. You also may recognise many of the Queenz from various stints across a number of the West End stages.
Whilst most drag performances are associated with lip-syncing you won’t find any during this show. All the Queenz have the chance to showcase their impressive vocal ranges during both solo and group performances. And as for the soundtrack of the show, I’d best describe it as a pop party wet dream. Featuring classic pop hits from The Spice Girls, Cher, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and many more of the greats.
Alongside the pop sensations they also feature some tracks from popular musicals. One of the highlights for me was “Drag me to the musicals” when the Queenz performed 20 musicals in 7 minutes. Including Chicago, Wicked, and Grease. They amend some of the words to both celebrate and have a little joke about the world of drag. Like instead of defying gravity Dior Monte sings about defying gender roles. It was a fun and triumphant moment that the audience were going wild for!
Whilst overall the show is all about fun, frivolity, and celebration, there were some touching and emotion moments too. The Queenz delivered a beautiful rendition of True Colours by Cyndi Lauper and I genuinely felt myself tearing up. The Queenz also delivered a speech about acceptance and Candy Caned got choked up during her part. You can see how much the show meant to each of the Queenz and the love they have for it.
Overall, the show gives concert vibes but there is underlining message the Queenz want to share with the audience. A reminder that everyone can be a Queen, that everyone deserves acceptance and love, and to not take life too seriously. Queenz – The Show With Balls is the perfect show if you are looking for something fun that gives a sense of escapism. Make sure to check out the upcoming dates for the UK Tour and get your tickets booked.
