Anthony Gilet “What Am I Like” Review – The Cavendish Arms
Comedian Anthony Gilet brings his sell-out Edinburgh Fringe show “What Am I Like?” to London. Showing at The Cavendish Arms, Anthony has previously been hailed as the gay millennial Carrie Bradshaw by Attitude Magazine. I had the pleasure of meeting Anthony at an event to celebrate The Gantry Hotel’s 1st birthday. He invited us to come and see the show and as a comedy lover who was I to say no.
Opening the show Anthony begins with getting to know the audience, asking names, jobs, who they came with, etc. He interacts with people with such ease and effortlessly had everyone in hysterics almost instantly. He is very clear that his comedy is of a darker nature and is not for the faint of heart. It was refreshing to see someone throw out the rule book and just enjoy themselves on stage.
Nothing was off limits when it came to Anthony’s comedy, he tackles religion, sexuality, death, and so much more. He showed off that he was a man magnet from a young age, from the time when he was nearly kidnapped. But his Mum had the cheek to ruin it and ruin his chances at featuring in the papers and getting a Netflix special. To being chased home from school with the other boys throwing rocks, basically the same as girls getting chased and their pigtails pulled.
Everyone has crude or silly thoughts that they are a bit worried to say out loud, but Anthony has you covered. Like calling out straight guys who say they don’t mind going to a gay club but only if no one hits on them. It’s always the ugly ones, with dents in their face and tufts of hair, like a lollipop dropped on the carpet. The women don’t want you, what makes you think that the men are that desperate.
Some of the questions tackled in the show include is there anything more awkward than an ugly baby. And should gay people be afraid of hell when all the fun things are there? And talking of childhood and sexual orientation, when Anthony came out to his family, they were really supportive. Which is so rude because all any gay man wants more than acceptance is a little bit of drama. The show ended with a preview of some new material and I for one can’t wait to see his new show.
If you love a bit of dark humour, and no topics are off limits, then you need to see Anthony Gilet if you get the chance. “What Am I Like?” is Anthony’s first hour-length show but if you’re easily offended this is not for you. I literally can’t remember the last time I’ve laughed this much at a comedy show. If you could get that next show planned soon, please because I need to get another comedic fix in.
