Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales Together Again, Again Review

The year is 2065, the sun has exploded, and Earth is being ruled by reptilian alien overlords. Somehow Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales have somehow survived and after 45 years apart, they’re back Together Again, Again. The concept is that Jinkx and Monsoon are reuniting after a falling out. And together they take the audience on a journey to see what happened over the past 45 years.

An absurd concept as a whole but when you know that Jinkx Monsoon is involved suddenly it seems so normal. Both appear on stage as aged-up versions of themselves in this 70 minute one-act cabaret performance. Jinkx has become a faded TV movie starlet and Major has faded into musical obscurity. And through the power of video and song we find out why they fell out and how the world has changed.

The format of the show allows both performers to fully showcase their individual talents. Jinkx Monsoon has an incredible voice and Major Scales is a very talented pianist. They performed a mixture of original songs and musical theatre covers, with a play on lyrics at times. I must add that it’s very impressive that Major can continue playing the piano during clearly improvised moments. They both had great stage presence, playing off the audience well and had everyone laughing throughout.

I was a big fan of Jinkx Monsoon on season five of Drag Race, which she won. It was great to see her cement her place as a performer outside of this setting. Whilst there were some references to the show, it did not rely on that to get laughs or pull in crowds. Even if you had never an episode of the show you would still be able to fully enjoy the performance. I was not familiar with Major Scales prior to Together Again, Again but he has a new fan right here.

A bizarre concept for a show but a great night out all the same. It’s high camp, with great one-liners, comical songs, and a lot of side-splitting moments. Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales are a force to be reckoned with and did not fail to entertain. The duo works really well together, and I look forward to their next collaboration. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take another 45 years to create. Together Again, Again is currently showing at Leicester Square Theatre before it embarks on a tour across the UK.
