THE GINGER SNAPPED

“I’ve got nothing to prove, doll or dude, I’m just me”

Jinkx Monsoon, winner of season 5 of RuPauls Drag Race, joined forces with Major Scales to release a collaborative album: The Ginger Snapped. They are currently touring the UK showcasing the album – however not as you’d expect.

The show started with a frantic Major preparing for the arrival of ‘Miss Jinkx’. He hints at Jinxk’s ‘crazy’ whilst humorously pouring excessive amounts of vodka into her glass. We are warned about the ‘she beast’ before Major announces her imminent arrival. The show sees Jinkx being psychoanalysed by her musical counterpart and pianist, Major Scales, as Jinkxworries that her best years are behind her. The witty collision of music and mental health, that is darkly funny.

Dressed firstly in what appears like a glam take on medical scrubs, Jinkx quickly strips into a silky green lingerie style playsuit and dons a floor-length ruffled kimono, sheer yet of a similar colour – simple yet fabulous!

My favourite song was Just Me (The Gender Binary Blues) due to the humorous way that Jinkx portrayed the message behind self identification. Simply saying “I’ve got nothing to prove, doll or dude, I’m just me,” the song is excepting of everyone, highlighting that in a world obsessed with labels, it’s a great form of strength to simply be yourself – “what does it matter if you’re a girl or a guy, what good’s a label do?”

Another favourite song of mine was Cartoons and Vodka. I loved the animated video accompaniment, finding it clever how how school cartoons were adapted for Jinkx’s song.

Overall, it was an hour and half of fun and laughter, with the occasional motivational speech thrown in. Peppered with ad-libbed one liners, and carefully crafted jokes, the show is acidly hilarious, yet genuine – welcome to the wonderful world of Jinkx Monsoon!

Filled with genuine rage and beautiful moments of love, ‘The Ginger Snapped’ is a brilliant concept to promote an album. An evening of side splitting fun that is bound to fill you with joy – I’d definitely recommend this show!
