A SENSUAL AND CELEBRATORY EXPLORATION OF THE FANDANGO, FLAMENCO, AND SPIN!

I was delighted to be invited to Step into the mesmerising world of ¡Fandango! and to be allowed to let the fiery passion of flamenco and the rhythmic beats of traditional music sweep me away. It’s was all part of Sadler’s Wells fabulous Flamenco festival which honestly was one of my favourite dance experiences that I have had for a long time.

This performance was a collaboration between choreographer David Coria and singer David Lagos is a true masterpiece that was truly captivating.  Truly what a beautiful voice Lagos has, it’s almost hauntingly soulful. The second he walked on and started singing and I was won over. Honestly, WHAT A VOICE. 

In ¡Fandango!, Coria and Lagos breathe new life into the centuries-old fandango, which is a native partnered dance from Spain Portugal (and look, let’s be real, true G’s are aware of the Romani origins of a lot of Flamenco so I’m gonna drop that in here too)  infusing it with a contemporary twist that is both visually stunning and emotionally stirring. Co-produced with Chaillot Théâtre National de la Dance in Paris, this performance is a journey through the rich tapestry of Spanish history and tradition. Visually it was stunning.

DAVID LAGOS: WHAT A VOICE, HAUNTINGLY SOULFUL!

The cast of nine talented performers transforms the stage into a lively Andalusian square, where the spirit of celebration is palpable. Moving seamlessly between flamenco and modern dance, traditional songs and electronic music, ¡Fandango! pays homage to Iberian folk culture and showcases a Spain that is free-spirited and captivating if not haunted by some scars from it’s rich past. I will also never see my hair in the same light again, put it that way. I have since taken to swinging my hair around like one of the dancers, because it just looks so darn sensual fierce! 

With Coria’s extensive experience collaborating with esteemed Spanish dance companies and Lagos’s accolades at the Biennale of Flamenco in Seville, ¡Fandango! is a testament to the brilliance and talent of these two artists.

For my first flamenco experience it was certainly one I’d recommend to anyone and I will certainly be seeing the next Flamenco show when it comes around. Also, I cannot stress enough, I adore sitting with a Spanish audience and loved the calls of Ole! That was called out when a performer was bringing it. LOVED it!
