A MESMERISING AND ENERGETIC CELEBRATION OF JAPANESE CULTURE: DRUM TAO’S ELECTRIFYING LONDON DEBUT

On paper it can be hard to get across just how fabulous this show was – but it certainly is more than a ‘show about Japanese music with a focus on drums’ which is how I initially described it to friends before I went. Oh no, dear reader the debut performance of Drum TAO in London is a breath-taking fusion of tradition and modernity that left the audience spellbound. The level of physical performance that was presented to us was astounding – these musicians put in the WORK that is for sure!

From the moment the nine performers take the stage in their striking outfit complete with capes (who doesn’t appreciate a good cape?!) you know you’re in for something extraordinary. The combination of their athleticism, precision, and sheer energy is awe-inspiring, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience.

The heart of the show lies in the thunderous beats of the Wadaiko drums, which reverberate through the theatre, creating a visceral connection with the audience. You literally feel like part of the show. The live drumming is electrifying, each strike of the drumhead resonating with raw power and emotion. It’s a very fluid show with constant changes and set pieces which keeps it engaging and interesting for its eternity. Drum TAO is more than just drumming—it’s a multi-sensory spectacle. The haunting melodies of the Shinobue flute, the delicate plucking of the Koto harp, and the rhythmic strumming of the Syamisen guitar add layers of beauty and depth to the performance, showcasing the rich tapestry of Japanese musical tradition. Ah when the Syamisen came out I was absolutely delighted and it was truly a trad rock moment with a twist.

What truly sets Drum TAO apart is their ability to blend centuries-old artistry with contemporary flair. The choreography is razor-sharp, a testament to the performers’ incredible discipline and physicality. They are like anime super heroes doing martial arts and I was here for it. Every movement is deliberate, every gesture purposeful, creating a visual feast that complements the auditory splendor. The contemporary costumes and stunning visuals further elevate the production, making it a feast for the eyes as well as the ears.

Drum TAO’s London debut at the Peacock Theatre is a triumph, a celebration of Japanese culture that transcends language and borders. Their dedication to their craft is evident in every beat, every note, and every step. They also look like they are having fun as they do it with the performance smiling and enjoying every single wallop of their drum stick. It was infectious. It isn’t just a serious show, there are certainly comedic and aspects of clownery which I really enjoyed. Their audience engagement is also superb with us being encouraged to clap along and react as they perform.  It’s no wonder they’ve captivated over eight million spectators worldwide and earned international acclaim. This is more than a performance—it’s an experience, a journey into the heart of Japan’s artistic heritage, reimagined for the modern stage. A must see for Japanophiles and music fans alike, as there is something for everyone – even the grumpiest theatre goer would leave this show feeling energised and it’s a great show for younger people to see as well (but it is LOUD).
