A DRAG-TASTIC DISNEY DELIGHT: HAPPILY EVER AFTER WITH A TWIST

Have you ever come across a show and thought “Was this made especially for me?”. Because that was my instant thought when I heard about Dizney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody. As someone who loves Disney and has a deep appreciation for drag, I was very excited to see the show. And I can happily report that I was not disappointed, two words for you: simply sensational! From the moment the show started, I was completely captivated.

The main character, a take on Hercules, embarks on a quest not just for love but for self-acceptance. Along the way we meet a slew of characters including the Hairy Godmother, Ariel, Snow White, Jasmine, and even Gaston. Each character is brought to life with a unique, cheeky twist. Each portrayal is infused with humour and heart, making for a delightful blend of nostalgia and novelty.

One of the standout elements is its brilliant use of parody with the songs. They take classic Disney songs and turn them into adult-themed anthems that had the audience laughing uncontrollably. Part of Your world from The Little Mermaid was transformed into a song about sexual preferences, sex toys, and exploring kinks. And Gaston from Beauty and the Beast saw the entire cast don strap-ons, which had me in hysterics. It’s a remarkable skill to take such beloved songs and rework them so cleverly.

A CLEVER, HILARIOUS, AND HEARTWARMING SHOW THAT OFFERS A FRESH TAKE ON BELOVED FAIRYTALES THROUGH THE VIBRANT LENS OF DRAG

Visually, Dizney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody is a feast for the eyes. The Hairy Godmother’s hooped skirt was a source of endless surprises, with hidden items pulled out throughout the performance. It added an extra layer of whimsy to the show as well as intrigue as we wondered where everything was concealed. Audience participation was another layer adding to the performance. It was great to see everyone getting into the spirit of the show making it a collective experience.

Beyond the humour and entertainment, the show carried important themes of self-love and acceptance. It’s a powerful message wrapped in glitter and laughter, reminding us all to embrace ourselves and celebrate our individuality. This underlying theme adds an emotional depth to the comedy. The Australian cabaret troupe, The Hairy Godmothers, should be extremely proud of their creation, it’s something truly special. If you’re a Disney fan, a drag enthusiast, or just looking for a night of fantastic entertainment, this show is an absolute must-see.
