I’ve been to my fair share of concerts, but there’s something truly magical about a season opener. The buzz in the Festival Hall last night was infectious, and let me tell you, the LPO did not disappoint with their performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. It was one of those nights that reminds you exactly why live music is so special. What an absolute triumph for the London Philharmonic Orchestra!

The evening began with the intriguing modern textures of George Benjamin’s ‘Ringed by the Flat Horizon’, which perfectly set the stage for the auditory delights to come. But it was with Beethoven’s mighty ‘Emperor’ Concerto that the night truly caught fire. The legendary Yefim Bronfman was the captivating soloist, and what a performance it was. The power, the nuance—it’s an absolute joy. He wasn’t just playing; he was storytelling, and we were all captivated. A truly charismatic performer.

After the interval, we were treated to a glorious rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. This is where you can truly capture the raw emotion of the music in a live setting. The passionate musical narrative unfolded with breathtaking intensity, driven by the energetic and passionate guidance of conductor Edward Gardner. Under his baton, the LPO played with a unified spirit and verve that was simply mesmerising. How these musicians maintain such precision and feeling is a mystery I’ll never solve. Like seriously, Bronfman performed with no sheet music…like, how?!

A personal highlight was sharing this experience with my fabulous plus one, who was attending a full orchestra concert for the first time. To witness their wonder and joy, and to share an art form I have come to love so deeply [Integrate them into the LPO cult] , was incredibly special. It only reinforced my belief that everyone should see an orchestra play live. Hearing icons like Beethoven and Tchaikovsky in these settings is an auditory delight that, as the saying goes, just slaps different.

A complete and utter treat from start to finish. Highly, highly recommended!
