Potted Panto Review – Garrick Theatre

When the pandemic hit theatres and venues across the globe shut down and the entertainment industry took a big hit. Virtual shows and online events were arranged but it was not the same for audiences or entertainers. There’s nothing like the feel of a real audience; the atmosphere, the interaction and the excitement. But just in time for Christmas theatre is making a comeback and I could not be more excited.

My first trip back to the theatre was to see Potted Panto at the Garrick Theatre. Taking you through 7 pantomimes in 70 minutes, it sounded like the perfect show to see as the month turns festive. Putting their own twist on the classic pantomimes, CBBC double-act Dan and Jeff are bringing Christmas cheer to their audiences. Dan and Jeff star in a multitude of roles with the assistance of Jacob Jackson and Charlotte Payne.

Dan and Jeff have previously created Potted Sherlock, Potted Pirates and Potted Potter, which I saw a few years ago. The pair have a great dynamic and bounce off each other’s energy and tease each other with unexpected adlibbing. You find yourself laughing along with them as they go off script, but it still flows within the show. The show is light-hearted, funny and appeals to all the family with jokes for everyone.

Get ready for some inappropriate humour that will go over the kids heads whilst they enjoy the hilarity of pantomime. Like when the mayor in Dick Whittington ends up having a stark resemblance to Boris Johnson. And you’re in for a treat when the show becomes 3D through an interesting audience participation segment. Although it does go on a little longer than is necessary but is a bit of fun, nonetheless.

When it comes to the measures necessary for opening during the pandemic everything felt extremely safe. Prior to attending Potted Panto, you are asked to check-in online and confirm you have no COVID symptoms. You are then given a time slot to arrive so that social distancing can be maintained. The venue will only accept E-tickets, your temperature is taken on arrival and contactless bag checks are in place.

Potted Panto runs for 70 minutes and there is no interval to avoid social distancing being breached. The seats have a 1 metre distance between them and the seat in between each party is kept empty. Potted Panto is running at the Garrick Theatre from December 5^th to January 10^th 2021. If you are looking for a bit of festive joy and love pantomimes why not see 7 in one show.
