Peter Pan’s Labyrinth Review – The Vaults

You are formally invited to the fairy wedding of the year in this alternative comedy from Sleeping Trees! Returning with another festive mashup, Peter Pan’s Labyrinth combines the unlikely trio of Peter Pan, Pan’s Labyrinth and David Bowie’s Labyrinth. In this alternative adult comedy David Bowie, the Goblin King, is looking for someone’s life to mess with. Enter Peter Pan, now out of shape and older having been banished from Neverland, doomed to live a mortal life.

Peter finds out that Tinkerbell is getting married to his nemesis Captain Hook back in Neverland. With no way of returning, his only option is to navigate his way to the centre of David Bowie’s Labyrinth. If he makes it to the centre, he will be granted a single wish; the ability to fly once again. Along the way we see Sleeping Tree’s take on an array of characters from all three films.

Multi award-winning comedy trio Sleeping Trees is made up of three performers: Joshua George Smith, James Dunnell-Smith, and John Woodburn. They’ve been working together since 2010 and have created a total of 15 productions in that time. Peter Pan’s Labyrinth sees the trio joined by a fourth onstage performer for the first time. Drag artist Dan Wye, better known onstage as Seayonce, takes on the role of David Bowie.

It’s a bizarre show that seems a little chaotic and thrown-together at times, but it just works. The props as a standalone seem poor choices but the cast get maximum output from them. From sleeping bags, googly eyes, a Kermit puppet, they manage to transform them into something magical. Who would have thought that a singing toilet would be a highlight of a show? Or that Dan Wye’s side role as Peter’s Shadow would have me in absolute hysterics.

Make sure to grab yourself a themed cocktail whilst watching the show. With names including Drinkerbell and The Fizzy Stardust the bar truly gets involved into the pantomime of the evening. I’d recommend ordering the Pornstar Banana Martini Slushie, especially if you want a cheeky surprise. Peter Pan’s Labyrinth is a combination of cabaret, drag, panto, puppetry, and theatre. It has a witty narrative that immerses the audience into the plot whilst keeping them in hysterics throughout. If you’re looking for a unique, entertaining night out this Christmas season this is the show for you.
