BRAWN IS A PORTAL INTO THE WORLD OF A YOUNG MAN NAMED RYAN
A world consumed by image and obsession, where self-worth is measured in muscle mass and where self-improvement becomes self-destruction.
A world that is spiralling out of control…
BRAWN is a raw, emotional and illuminating piece of theatre focussing on Ryan, our sole character who suffers from body dysmorphic disorder – a serious mental health issue related to body image.
Young adults are increasingly concerned about self-image in a culture obsessed with carefully constructed social media images. BRAWN highlights the anxiety and mindset of a young man who has developed obsessive worries about perceived flaws in his physical appearance, and who has adopted an obscenely strict gym regime that is taking over his life.
BRAWN is an extraordinary insight into the mind of Ryan. The play is not afraid to address issues surrounding an adolescent’s relationship with their parents and the reasons why mental health issues develop. The play considers questions surrounding depression, anxiety and self-image in a poignant manner.
