BAR + BLOCK ALDGATE – Food Review

Bar + Block Aldgate

Recently opened Bar + Block Aldgate is the latest addition to this chains locations, and we were lucky enough to be invited down to try it out. I mean it was easy to say yes, i do love a steak. But being a steak lover, did that compliment or hinder my opinions…read on.

With seven venues now open and a eighth on the way in Wimbledon early 2019, Bar + Block are an increasingly popular Steak Restaurant that prides itself on not coming with the price tag that normally comes with good quality food especially in London.

I was invited down to check out the newly opened Bar + Block Aldgate site, now just over a month old. Hoping this would be a good experience my taste buds were tingling as i love a good steak, and it was the day before my birthday, so was hoping it would be a good start to early celebrations.

SERVICE

I was welcomed in and although no one initially was on the reception desk, bar staff noticed we were waiting and ensured that we were seen too quickly by asking if we needed a table for two. Having a reservation and good timing the manager had returned and took our details and swiftly brought us to our table, situated at the top of the restaurant to the right of the open kitchen.

We were placed at our seats and informed about a couple of the items that were not available to order on our visit. We were also informed that our server for the evening would be Sue..we were also given our water and beef flavoured pop corn…yes beef flavoured!

I have to say Sue was brilliant throughout the evening, unaware we were there to review ensured that the service we had was that of which everyone received. Sue again let us know what was unavailable and was on hand for any questions we had. Although we never leaned on Sue for information or recommendations i sense that whatever i asked she would have been able to advise confidently and knowledgeably. Sue was great throughout, attentive when need be and more than friendly which enhanced our experience of the evening.

FOOD

The bit you all want to know..

The Menu..has plenty of choice and not just for Steak lovers like myself. From sharing plates, Salads, Fish & Veg options, the obvious Steaks and Grills to Burgers and Sunday Lunch. Given the day and mood i’m sure you can find something to tickle your taste buds.

So we started with 3 starters (or grazing plates as described). Going for Asian Crispy Beef, Salt & Pepper Squid and Cheese & Jalapeno Stuffed Dippers. Again an note to Sue as she also informed us the Jalapeno dippers wouldn’t be maybe what we would normally expect, which again managed expectation.

While we waited we refreshed ourselves on our drinks, myself going for a draught pint of San Miguel, the wife chose Gin and was presented with an option of five different gins and the same amount in tonic options to go with it!

The starters came and wow! Presented well, in dishes. The portions were actually bigger than expected and the bowls definitely deeper than they look, i was a gentleman and ensured i shared all with the wife. The squid was delicious and cooked perfectly, and although even shaped like mini octopus!(well that’s what i thought anyway)  Jalapeno dippers were nice and weren’t too hot, but my favourite was the Asian beef. Cooked beautifully, the beef was tasty and mixed with the veg perfectly complimented.

Ordering the steak was easy. The menu had a clear explanation of types of cuts and where they were from on the animal. Explaining what to expect – this was a really useful source of information and helped my wife with her choice. Additionally Sue was on hand to advise also. We were also informed that if we didn’t see a size that we wanted then all we had to do was ask! Yes if you wanted bigger the onsite butcher was more than happy to create a piece to your liking, which for me makes it a more personalised offering and great selling point.

My choice was a classic 10oz Sirloin cooked Medium, which came with triple cooked, beef dripped chips, and the additional side i ordered of carrots and honey glazed parnsips. My wife ordered a fillet and as she likes it well done, we were informed instantly that we would have a slightly longer wait for it. Again great service and well informed, after a short wait out it came and i quickly mixed it all onto my plate together.

The vegetables were fab, the chips crispy on the outside but soft inside, the parsnips gorgeous and well glazed ensuring the honey flavour came through, the carrots not too hard nor too soft.

I had chosen to have no sauces as i wanted to enjoy the steak for the cut it was, and enjoy it i did. Medium was asked for and Medium is what i got. The steak easy to cut through, soft and just delicious. 10oz was a good size to have but i could of carried on eating more.

Once we had settled the main, we were offered dessert, of which i went for Ice Cream, there’s always space for ice cream see.. and the wife went for Salted Toffee Apple Crumble. The ice cream was nice as you would expect, 3 scoops. You could have all one flavour or mix them up, so i had Salted Caramel x 2 scoops and 1 Coconut Sorbet. Just look at them below…need i say more?

My experience overall was fantastic and the only negative i honestly have to say is its location. Set in a side street surrounded by offices and adjoined to a hotel, i dont think its location gives it the credit it deserves or should i say the awareness it deserves. Not instantly visable, unless you are aware of the restaurant, staying in the hotel next door or work around it you may not know of its existence which is a real shame. Placed on a high street i think this restaurant would flourish.

To celebrate the opening, for the next week until the 9th December, Bar + Block Steakhouse will be treating locals to 40% off mains – just sign up at www.barandblock.co.uk/signup to receive a voucher and secure a spot.
